This morning I took Emma to the pediatrician for her 18 month check-up....but she will be 20 months in a few days. She did great. They weighed and measured her first and then the doctor came in to see her. There were a few issues that I needed to discuss with the her too. First, many of you know already but Emma hasn't started speaking yet. She says mama and dada occasionally, but that's it. She makes a bunch of different sounds though. So after the doctor spent some time with Emma, she suggested we have her seen by a speech therapist. She thinks that Emma just has a speech delay and that everything is ok. Normally they don't start this process until 2 years but I want to go ahead and get a head start just in case there is a problem. The program is through the state and they will come out to our house to evaluate her and then we'll go from there. Dr. Lowe thinks that this will be easily fixed. Next, I had her look at Emma's bottom teeth. She thinks that there might be an issue with the enamel of her front two teeth and suggested we get them looked at by a pediatric dentist. Hopefully they are fine and it's something she will grow out of...but we'll just have to wait and see. After the doctor left, the nurse came back in and Emma had to get 2 shots. I was really dreading it but she did wonderful. She started fussing when I had to hold her down and then cried while she was getting stuck but once I picked her up and hugged on her, she was fine. I was really surprised with how well she did. I'm so proud of her.
Here are Emma's 20 month stats:
27 lbs 15 oz-90% [chunky butt]
32 1/2 in. tall-50%{short stuff]
She is STILL wearing size 3 diapers but we will be moving to size 4's very soon. She is also wearing 18-24 month clothes and size 5 shoe.
trying to escape before the nurse comes to stick hershe always loves to play with the tylenol bottle

aidan was 2 1/2 before he started talking to where you could understand him. and it's just been in the past year that he's speaking in complete sentences. he could not make the "y" sound until about 6 months ago. emma will get there. but it's natural to worry that our kids aren't on track with everyone else. i'd seriously considered a speech therapist for aidan as well but he eventually worked it out.
i totally agree. we think emma is probably too young to be seeing a speech therapist however, its a free program and we figured that it couldn't hurt to just see if something may be wrong. and if there ends up being something wrong, then we will have a head start in fixing it. it's so easy to get wrapped up in people telling you what your child should be doing. emma is constantly compared to what others are doing. its so frustrating because people feel like if she isn't doing what their child was doing at her age then there is something wrong with her. thanks for letting me know about aidan...it makes me feel better to know that emma isn't the only one. :]
we always want what's best for our kids! i didn't realize that his speech wasn't up to par until we moved back to the states last year and he was around other kids. i'd be at the playground and kids younger than him would say "what'd he say?". i always thought speech was something kids learned on their own. but i realize now that with aidan we actually had to teach him how to make certain sounds and say certain words. shawn worked with him an entire weekend to get him to say "yes". so having someone work with emma will hopefully open her up a little more. and if she does have a delay, better to find out now. good luck with everything.
